FAQ for Parents and Guardians

The Student Conduct Code outlines the behavioral expectations for individual students and student organizations who choose to join the Colorado State University community. To learn more about the Student Conduct Code click here.

Student conduct proceedings and documentation are part of a student’s educational record. A student’s educational record is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). In most cases you will not be notified of your student’s alleged Student Conduct Code violations. We do encourage students to talk to their parent/guardian about the challenges they are navigating. If a student would like SRC staff to communicate about the alleged incident, we will need their written consent to do so.

They will receive notification from our office via their CSU email of the alleged charges. In this notification they will be informed that they have either been scheduled for a student conduct hearing or that they have been provided an alternative resolution process. To see the complete student conduct process please click here.

You can support your student by helping to guide them through the student conduct process. Additionally, you can help by identifying campus resources and interventions available to them that address behavioral concerns.

Students can bring a support person/advisor to their student conduct hearing. The support person/advisor may not speak on behalf of the student or student organization, nor can they participate directly in the hearing.

When a student is found responsible for engaging in prohibited behavior the Hearing Officer will consider the totality of information when determining appropriate sanction(s). The intent of assigning a sanction is to provide appropriate education, conflict management, treatment, support and accountability for the student/organization as a result of their behavior. Many sanctions are designed to be educational and restorative in nature.

We encourage you to connect with your student to discuss the incident. They are aware that a letter was sent to you.

Students have the right to appeal their hearing outcome within 10 business days of their outcome letter being sent to them. To learn more about the appeal process click here.

Reportable student conduct record means any record maintained by Student Conduct Services when a student or organization has been sanctioned to a disciplinary standing (examples: Disciplinary Probation, Loss of Good Standing, Deferred Disciplinary Suspension, Disciplinary Suspension, Disciplinary Expulsion).

The University’s student conduct process is a separate and sometimes concurrent process with criminal justice system. Please review our philosophy in the Student Conduct Code to review the University’s expectations of student behavior.

Our Conflict Resolution Services staff can help with student conflicts. Please click here to learn more about our Conflict Resolution Services.

If a student does not complete a sanction by the stated deadline, a “hold” will be placed on the student’s registration status. A student is notified of their sanction deadlines in their hearing outcome letter and occasional reminder letters. To learn more about our hold policy click here.
